オーストラリア・ビクトリア州政府は東京オフィスを拠点に日本で40年以上の活動をしてきており、ビクトリア州の研究機関と日本の企業、研究機関との更なる連携を促進するためにこの度のウェビナーを開催致します。

ビクトリア州はメルボルンを州都としたオーストラリア南東部の州であり、研究開発やスタートアップ支援、技術革新に力を注いできたオーストラリアのイノベーションをリードしている州です。医薬・バイオ・ITなどに強みを持ち、州政府としてもビクトリア州の研究機関と海外との共同研究や投資を促進するため、世界22か所に海外オフィスを展開しています。

世界でトップクラスの機関の多くが高水準の教育システムやユニークで革新的な文化に魅力を感じて、メルボルンを研究開発の活動拠点と展開しています。また、ビクトリア州にはオーストラリア全体のライフサイエンス関連R&D予算の半分以上が投下されています。

オーストラリアの大学の研究の質をランク付けしているExcellence in Research for

Australia(ERA)において、2018年度のERAランキングでは、医用生体工学、神経科学、物性物理学、人間動作、スポーツ科学、ナノテクノロジー、免疫学、建築、経済学、心理学、天文学、宇宙科学などの109分野が「世界標準をはるかに上回る」レベル、その他の多くは「世界標準を上回る」レベルとして評価されました。そのメルボルンの研究開発機関・大学から3名の研究者を招いて、研究実績の事例紹介を致します。

発表内容

In the presentation, he will describe the research and development work of his University of Melbourne colleagues, rather than his own.

He will cover current projects in agri-tech including;

• Microwave systems for combating weeds;
• Development of tools for assessing soil quality and ameliorating nutrient deficiencies at the microscale;
• Sensor systems for agricultural production, being plants, animals or insects;
• Creating agricultural systems that are more aware of, and resilient to, the negative effects of climate change.
• Current projects in foodtech including
• Traceback systems for exported processed food products;
• Plant-based protein systems and their physicochemical properties;
• Cellular agriculture;
• Utilising low value waste biproducts of food production, as value-added food ingredients.

Victoria has a long standing and internationally recognized reputation in regenerative medicine and related research including stem cells and tissue engineering.  It is enhancing this reputation with the establishment of the Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute to further progress research and the Centre for Commercialisation of regenerative Medicine (CCRM) Australia to support the translation and commercialisation of the research outputs.  Bothe these initiatives are taking a national approach and with a strong international focus have a successful track record of working with Japanese researchers and companies.  The presentation will outline opportunities available in Victoria for Japanese researchers and companies interested in regenerative medicine and related therapies.

The nutraceutical industry has seen remarkable growth in Australia and globally. This growth is expected to continue, especially on the back of expansion of the China and broader Asian markets. Even though Australia has a well-established nutraceutical industry, many of the raw ingredients used to manufacture final products are imported to Australia. Ironically, the agricultural crops used to derive these ingredients are abundant in Australia, often within the large quantities of green waste generated by the agricultural sector. Utilising these resources has the potential to further expand Australia’s nutraceutical industry, and provide opportunities to grow employment, skills and infrastructure.

Associate Professor Gregory Harper

Gregory Harper is a biological scientist who focusses on the translation of scientific discoveries into commercial, environmental and social outcomes. He is Director of Business Development and International Engagement for the Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences within the University of Melbourne. He also leads the business development team for the four STEM Faculties, within the University’s Research, Innovation and Commercialisation, business unit.

Gregory has spent his career working in the global science community and has professional expertise in management of public and private R&D funds. He was awarded a PhD in Biochemistry from Monash University in 1985 before undertaking a Fogarty International postdoctoral Fellowship at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, USA. Before returning home to Australia in 1988 to take up an NH&MRC Australian Postdoctoral Fellowship, Gregory was a Wenner-Gren Fellow at Uppsala University in Sweden, working on extracellular matrix biochemistry. After completing R&D work on human therapies for inherited metabolic disease in Adelaide, Gregory transitioned to agricultural and food sustainability R&D through his recruitment into the CSIRO. Over the subsequent twenty five years, he has held research leadership roles, and executive roles in the CSIRO, an executive director role within the Victorian state government, a Non-executive Director role on the board of Meat and Livestock Australia, as well as hands-on roles in his family business, Crondar Pty Ltd. He is now an executive within the University of Melbourne.

Gregory has led international R&D projects with collaborators in the United States, in Sweden, in multiple Australian states, and in Kobe, Japan. There he worked with animal geneticist colleagues at Kobe University on the genetic and metabolic bases, of the marbling phenotype of the Wagyu cattle breed. This work was supported by the Australian Academy of Science as well as the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.

His work in international engagement and technology transfer has been recognised internationally through the Alliance of Technology Transfer Professionals (RTTP) and through Fellowship with the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Mr. Silvio Tiziani

Silvio Tiziani is Director of External Strategy and Planning at the Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute and Chief Operating Officer for the Centre for Commercialisation of Regenerative Medicine (CCRM) Australia.

At ARMI, his focus is on external engagement, strategic planning and communications for the Institute, as well as identifying and developing the Institute’s national and international strategic alliances.

Mr Tiziani played a central role in establishing CCRM Australia to support the commercialisation of Australian regenerative medicine technologies, securing operational funding for the initiative and developing a national network of partner organisations.

His knowledge of the national and international regenerative medicine ecosystem including current academic and clinical research, government policy, private funding organisations and the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries is central to his success in establishing initiatives that promote and build Australia’s regenerative medicine capacity.
